"Deneb" Fine Investment, Collector's, Working Handmade Knife
  • Size: Length overall: 8.4" (21.3 cm), Blade Length: 4.0" (10.2 cm), Thickness: .194" (4.9 mm)
  • Weight: Knife: 6.1 oz. (173 grams) Sheath: 4.7 oz. (133 grams)
  • Blade: 440C High Chromium Martensitic Stainless Steel, Hardened and Tempered to Rockwell C58, mirror polished
  • Bolsters, Fittings: 304 Austenitic Stainless Steel, hand-engraved, mirror polished
  • Handle: Polished Seraphinite (Clinochlore) Gemstone
  • Sheath: Hand-carved, hand-tooled, hand-dyed Leather Shoulder
  • Knife: The Deneb is named for a blue-white supergiant star in the constellation Cygnus. This is a great knife design, with a practical and graceful drop-point blade married to a full and rounded teardrop pattern, palm-filling handle. I made this Deneb in 440C high chromium martensitic stainless steel, mirror polished for the highest corrosion resistance of any stainless tool steel while offering high wear resistance and high toughness. The blade is deeply and evenly hollow ground to yield a beautiful blade, thin at the cutting edge, yet with a significant spine for strength. The knife has full filework in a complex offset pattern from the grind tip to the forefinger placement. The blade has a substantial choil to terminate the cutting edge, and well-balanced and radiused grind terminations for clean curves and strength in the blade-to-handle junction. The knife is bolstered with zero-care 304 high nickel, high chromium austenitic stainless steel in which I hand-engraved a deep relief pattern I call "cosmic footprint" This pattern evolves from the curves and patterns in the gemstone, and the same pattern is reflected in the clean tooling of the sheath. The bolsters are dovetailed and bed a striking and rare pair of gemstone handle scales. This gemstone is Seraphinite, named for the Seraph, the winged angelic beings in service to God, a descriptive representation of the wing-like feathery patterns within the stone. This gemstone comes only from eastern Siberia in Russia, and is the mineral Clinochlore, a member of the chlorite group of minerals. Though most chlorites are very soft, Seraphinite is harder than most, and is well-supported by the tang and bolsters of the Deneb. The gemstone is used in fine jewelry, and has chatoyant (cat's eye) light play and beautiful patterns with some interesting crystalline pockets that can be seen with a magnifier in bright light. the handle feels solid in the hand and lightweight for its size, with the balance point of the knife just behind the forefinger placement.
  • Sheath: I wanted a special and unique sheath for this knife, so I built one in 9-10 oz. leather shoulder, and hand-carved, hand-tooled, and hand-dyed the cosmic footprint design in the face, back, and even in the belt loop of the leather, and hand-dyed it for a punchy, deep look that echoes the engraved pattern on the bolsters of the knife. The sheath is lacquered and sealed, and hand-stitched with black nylon for strength. The sheath protects the wearer and the knife fully, with a dropped front that allows just enough of the knife handle for unsheathing.
  • A stout, tough, and beautiful knife with a unique and rare gemstone handle, suitable for collection, investment, or use.

Thanks, D.S.!
