"The Cattleman" Collector's Castrating Knife

The Cattleman is a very special knife. This knife pattern was originally designed for castrating cattle, a dangerous yet necessary job. This knife was made to that pattern in artistic and collector's form. Click here to view the knife made in utility working form.

This Cattleman is deeply and thinly hollow ground in 440C high chromium martensitic stainless steel blade, with full filework, and custom etching on both sides of the blade. The handle has a fully tapered tang, with full filework that is hand-engraved. The knife has bolsters of hand-engraved 304 austenitic high nickel, high chromium stainless steel which are dovetailed and bed a pair of handsome Petrified Wood Agate gemstone handle scales. This is an extremely hard and tough gem, and will well outlast the knife, the owners, and probably our entire civilization. This material is, in fact, some of the hardest I've ever worked, taking a bright glassy polish, smooth and solid. The knife is displayed on an appropriate stand of polished cow's horn mounted to a hand-carved Amaranth (Purpleheart) hardwood base.

This is a beautiful knife that honors the partnership of the cattleman's industry, and was featured in the October 2006 issue of Persimmon Hill, the magazine for the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Details here.
